Where do I start? I feel ashamed that I wasted the precious minutes of my life watching this movie past the 10th minute. First, most of the actors in this movie do not even deserve the title of "actor". It felt like the person who casted this movie just asked some of his best friends to be in the movie or picked people off the street. Seriously, this was some of the worst acting I have ever seen.
The next thing you'll notice is that the sound was totally amateur. It's as if they shot the movie with a video camera and didn't even think to use a microphone. But you can tell there was a sound mixer-- who probably works at a dry cleaning shop for his day job. There are some scenes where you're supposed to believe there is a crowd watching and you can just hear how cheesy the crowd sound effect is. Really, the sound on this film is embarrassing.

The plot. Who cares? This movie was made as if they just got together and made it up as they went along. I've heard Chinese torture is pretty bad, but it ain't got nothing on this movie.

Against the Dark (2009) DVDRip

  Against the Dark (2009) DVDRip

Against the Dark (2009) DVDRip

In recent weeks, I ran out of shit to watch… which led to me actually renting Steven Seagal movies at my local video store. As I stood there, holding Against the Dark and Driven to Kill in my hands, I began to flush with embarrassment… and then I became mad, because there was once a time when you could stand in a video store line with a Seagal movie in your hand and not have everyone think that you’re a*** ing moron… yeah, they might think you have bad tastes, but it didn’t mean you were a moron. Thankfully, this vampire-fueled dystopic romp was worth all the excuses that I spewed at the clerk at the counter perused my choices… speaking of which… why can’t those***s just check the shit out and shut the *** up? You work at a Blockbuster. You think I give a *** what you thought of Blindness. You click buttons and alphabetize things!
Against the Dark is the story of a group of survivors in a 28 Days Later-esque world… only less British and more generic Romanian. These survivors are cursed by a plague that has swept through the world, creating vampires… of course they call them “the infected”… but they’re really just vampires, in much the same way that “the infected” in 28 Days Later are really zombies. Don’t argue it! We all know they’re zombies! Anyway, these*** s must find a way out of the city before it’s blown to shit by Keith David, who leads a surviving military presence on the outskirts of the city. With the help of a largely worthless group of ninja types, led by Steven Seagal and The Rock’s stunt double, the survivors just might have a chance… of getting their asses handed to them.

I don’t know why, but I actually kind of enjoyed this movie. For the most part, this is due to the creative decisions made by Richard Crudo, the director. Crudo does a wise thing and makes the survivors the focus of the film. Steven Seagal is relegated to a supporting character… a largely mute supporting character, and this makes all the difference in the world. Crudo also does a nice job of keeping the action fast and furious, and while there might be a little too much martial artistry on display for my liking, the pace of the film is quick enough to keep you interested. Some of the sets feel a little generic and the fact that we are pretty much limited to seeing what’s going on inside of a hospital is both a gift and a curse. On one hand, it allows the filmmakers to spend big on shit like special effects and quality actors. But on the other hand, the film’s scope doesn’t feel as grand as it could be. Hell, with a few re-writes and the ditching of Seagal and The Rock’s stunt double, this could have been a solid theatrical release… not blockbuster solid, but cult status solid.

The writing in the film is a little generic, but there are a shitload of people getting killed and some hot chicks on display, so it’s easy to overlook the fact that this is basically a 28 Days Later clone infused with vampires. Some of the logic problems in the film are annoying, but after your 20th vampire gets the*** killed out of them, you stop wondering why these survivors are cruising through a destroyed and dangerous world without a single weapon on them. You stop asking why Seagal and his buddies have guns, but don’t use them to kill vampires… preferring to get in close and dispatch them with swords and knives… when a single bite could end them. Trust me. You will stop asking these questions… maybe.

The cast of the film is pretty solid, especially for a Seagal flick. Seagal basically romps through the movie like a dude out of The Matrix, only with less emotion, a samurai sword, and a sparsity of dialogue… in short, they made it so Seagal wouldn’t be a minus on the film. The real star of the movie, with regards to screentime and screen presence, is Jenna Harrison. Harrison feels out of place in the movie. Her looks and her acting ability would make her perfect for one of those PG-13 horror shits that are always plaguing the multiplexes. It’s bewildering how she found her way into this little flick, but I ain’t complaining. Harrison is great as one of the survivors, and in a film that’s supposed to be about these random vampire hunters, she steals the show. The rest of the cast is solid, but no one truly stands out… with the exception of Keith David, who brings to mind the line “How the mighty have fallen.”

The special effects in the film are actually pretty solid. There are plenty of kills to go around, shitloads of corpses hanging about, and some solid vampire action. The gore and the horror are definitely balanced well throughout the movie. There are even a couple sets of bloody chesticles to be found in the film. When your sets look lame, paint them in blood and gore.

Against the Dark isn’t for everyone, but if you love indie horror flicks and don’t mind Steven Seagal that much, you can have a good time with this one. Just don’t examine it too close or you’ll hate it. This is definitely one to turn your brain off for.

Final Synopsis: This a cheap version of 28 Days Later with vampires… but it works on a mindless entertainment level. Give it a rent if you run out of shit to watch and you’re a diehard horror fan.

Points Lost: -1 for cheap sets, -1 for plot holes and logic errors, -1 for survivors who are in constant danger but don’t carry any weapons, -1 for some lame fight sequences

Lesson Learned: Since vampires run around at night, you should always search for stuff at night. That way, you can constantly be attacked. Also, leaving a city populated by things that want to eat you is apparently a bad idea.

Inkheart (2009) DVDRip

 Inkheart (2009) DVDRip Verry Interesting

Inkheart (2009) DVDRip

Watching Iain Softley's motley, jewel-toned adaptation of Inkheart, the best-selling 2003 young-adult novel by Cornelia Funke, I had the distinct sensation of being a young bookworm again, falling into a world as vividly real as it is impossible. In Funke's universe — given voice in a screenplay by fantasy-friendly playwright David Lindsay-Abaire—a literature lover named Mo (Brendan Fraser) possesses a dangerous talent for bringing characters from books to life when he reads aloud. The downside? When a fictional figure comes alive, a real person must disappear into the book's pages.
That explains the extended absence of Mo's wife, Resa (Sienna Guillory). Mo has not yet told the truth about Resa's disappearance to their intrepid young daughter, Meggie (Eliza Hope Bennett), just as many a movie adult before him annoyingly withheld information from their children for dramatic effect. (Maybe Fraser's Mo, a pleasantly square-framed American among a population of Brits, just can't bring himself to utter the word ''Mummy.'') It also explains the presence of a rambunctious crowd of fictional interlopers. These include a soulful fire juggler (Paul Bettany) who yearns for home (and why not, when real-life wife Jennifer Connelly appears briefly as the juggler's fairy-tale missus), and an acquisitive villain named Capricorn (Andy Serkis, always welcome even without his Gollum suit). A unicorn and The Wizard of Oz's flying monkeys also make appearances — as does, briefly, Toto too.

The story is a whirl, a jumble, an effusion — sometimes flowing smoothly, other times jerking along as if the filmmaker (Backbeat, The Wings of the Dove) has been given advice he resents regarding pacing and the balance of sweetness and danger. There are close calls, weird whispers, amusing throwaway lines, the ditherings of a distractible author (Jim Broadbent), and cartoon violence undertaken by misshapen scary-comic evil henchmen. But most deliciously madcap of all, there are the grand gestures and imperious pronouncements of Helen Mirren as Meggie's flesh-and-blood great-aunt Elinor, a creature of pencil-thin eyebrows and luscious costumery who caws and squawks with very unqueenly abandon. Mirren's all-out display in this distinctly British absurdo-literary extravaganza had me wishing Elinor were my own fabulous auntie and that she'd lend me some magic items from her closet. B

After repeated and expensive attempts to seize power through brute force fail, Cobra Commander comes up with a new plan to recover its financial investments and at the same time seize control of world power. The plan begins with the seizure of the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program array, which superheats the ionosphere. Following this seizure various rockets carrying electronic equipment are launched into low earth orbit. A solar powered stratellite network is deployed just below the ionosphere, allowing Cobra to maintain a covert worldwide communication network. Finally, at a decommissioned nuclear missile silo in Siberia, a prototype particle beam weapon is unveiled and powered up.http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1259299/
